Laney College, EcoArts class
I got to watch Paul Valva give the ClimateChange.org's slideshow. Pretty interesting stuff. I was tagging along, invited by our mutual friend Kat Steele.
I continue to marvel at the "Let them eat cake" undercurrent that runs through these presentations. I live in a town with fairly good public transit. Yet, the solution for reducing our CO2 isn't presented as ride the bus, it's presented as go buy a Prius.
In the car later, we got into a little bit of discussion around "poor people solutions" to global warming vs "rich people solutions." Giving up agri-business meat reduces an individual's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions more so than driving a Prius. But telling a person who identifies with a lower economic status that they can help save civilization by giving up their cheap, subsidized source of protein is not going to change anyone's behavior.
