Cary Greenwood has been customizing hot rods and custom cars for nigh onto 50 years. He started because the car magazines selling in the drugstore he worked at as a teen showed custom paint jobs and he said to himself, "I bet I could do that."

He could, he does, he gets into the custom car magazines, and he wins awards.

He's doing the work on my repair for $700. The lady who bumped me probably won't ever realize what a good deal she's getting. Eh, erm, maybe it's not a "good" deal, in that she certainly hadn't budgeted for this. But still, I'm glad to have found a professional who is doing the work, without overpricing the project.

Plus, he's a real nice guy. There's a magic in getting paid to do what you love to do. There's a greater magic in being your own boss. After 50 years of working it, I can tell you he is still very happy about the whole situation.

His son has caught the bug, and is his dad's apprentice. His stripes are pretty good.

Oh, that front end being worked on in the pic belongs to a record-setting coupe dragster. The owner is in his 60s and has been racing it for 40 years. Cary has been repainting it after every crash for all those 40 years. They are getting it ready for its last race before the owner sells it.

He's going to get something he can go faster in.
